Depart Phoenix on connecting flights, likely through London or Paris, to Lyon, France

Sunday, June 7, 2026

After arriving in Lyon, clear passport control, collect the luggage, and exit through customs to meet the full-time tour manager and board the waiting motorcoach for the one-hour drive to Grenoble.  Check into the hotel and enjoy a welcome dinner.

Monday, June 8, 2026

Breakfast is provided daily at each hotel.  Embark on a guided panoramic tour of “the capital of the Alps,” Grenoble, France.  Begin in Place Notre-Dame, site of the Cathedral of Grenoble which traces its history to the 10th century and boasts a unique characteristic of being attached to residential buildings.  Continue across the Pont St-Laurent, traversing the River Isère, to the colorful buildings that once housed the town’s glove factories, and then climb to the hillside Museé Dauphinois.  Housed in a former convent, a guided tour of the museum traces 7,000 years of Alpine history, exhibits the city’s love of winter sports, and displays preserved parts of the former convent. Transfer to the Hôtel de Ville – City Hall – for a welcome reception with Grenoble Sister Cities and town officials.  Return to the hotel for some free time, or explore Paul Mistral Park on own, before departing for dinner nestled in the nearby mountains.

Grenoble in winter, Haute-Savoie, France

Tuesday, June 9, 2026

Visit the Jardin de Ville, the town’s green gathering point alongside the River Isère, and board the Téléphérique cable cars – known colloquially as “The Bubbles” – for a quick ride to the Bastille.  This fort, nestled high above the town in the Chartreuse mountain range, dates to the 16th century French Wars of Religion between the Catholics and Protestants (Huguenots) and in the centuries since has served as protection from attacks emanating from the surrounding mountains.  At the Bastille, visit the Museum of French Mountain Troops for a narrated audio guide tour among life-size dioramas depicting the life and operations of these soldiers who defend the wintry mountain passes. After this short visit, enjoy the views from the terraces – on a clear day, one can see Mont Blanc – and then walk to a mountaintop group lunch.  Return to town via the bubbles and walk through the city center to the beautiful Place de Verdun, named in memory of the horrific World War I Battle of Verdun and surrounded by some of the city’s most-beautiful examples of Second Empire architecture.  A few steps away, visit the new Museum of the Resistance and Deportation in Isère, where a guide will chronicle the heroic efforts of Free France in Grenoble as they resisted the Nazis and Vichy France until the region’s liberation in 1944.  Dinner on own, then present a concert in conjunction with the Grenoble and Phoenix Sister Cities.

Wednesday, June 10, 2026

Check out of the hotel and leave the alps in the distance during the drive into the rolling hills and vineyards of Provence.  Arrive in Arles, and find lunch on own in the narrow, winding streets or open piazzas of this well-preserved Roman city.  Cuisines from around the world abound in the town’s many al fresco cafés and restaurants.  Gather for a guided walking tour which begins in the centerpiece of town, the 2,000-year-old Arles Arena.  The amphitheater housed 20,000 spectators in its original construction, entertaining the masses with chariot races and battles.  It now hosts the famous Feria d’Arles bullfights and other plays and concerts.  Continue to the Roman Theater of Arles, also dating from the 1st century, then explore the Church of Saint-Trophime, a beautiful former cathedral designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.  Walk along the Rhône River, this section of which was memorialized in Van Gogh’s Starry Night over the Rhône, for the short ride to Avignon.  Check into the hotel and enjoy dinner on own in this charming city.

Thursday, June 11, 2026

In 1309 the Papal court moved from Rome to Avignon, after the French Pope Clement V refused to leave France.  Begin the day with a guided visit the monumental remnant of the Avignon Papacy, the Palais des Papes.  The largest Gothic palace in all of Europe, its well-preserved architecture is highlighted by an augmented-reality exhibition that shows various rooms as they would have looked centuries ago.  Continue to the adjacent cathedral, Notre-Dame des Doms, and onward to the Rocher des Doms hilltop gardens overlooking the Rhône and the partially-collapsed Pont d’Avignon below.  Have lunch on own and the afternoon free for independent exploration among the shops of Rue de la République or a visit to the Museé du Petit Palais art museum (additional cost).  Dinner is provided this evening, then present a concert in Avignon.

Friday, June 12, 2026

Check out of the hotel and say “au revoir, France” on the journey to Catalonia, Spain.  After crossing the border, stop in Figueres for lunch on own and a visit to the Dalí Theater and Museum, designed with extensive input from Salvador Dalí himself and home to the largest collection of his major works.  Continue to Barcelona and visit Park Güell on arrival.  This expansive public park was designed by famed local architect Antonin Gaudí, funded by and dedicated to his patron, the industrialist Eusebi Güell.  Take in the beautiful vistas from the various parts of the park and enjoy the fantasy-like buildings and plazas Gaudí designed at nearly every turn.  Continue to the hotel for check-in, then enjoy a tapas dinner together as a group.

View of the city from Park Guell in Barcelona, Spain

Saturday, June 13, 2026

Start the day with a guided panoramic tour of Barcelona, starting with a drive up Montjüic for a look over the city and a visit to the Olympic Stadium.  Continue through Las Ramblas and the tony Passeig de Gracia, ending in the Gothic Quarter for the walking portion of the tour.  There, see the Barcelona Cathedral, the Jewish Quarter, the Roman city, and the Medieval city.  After lunch on own, take a guided tour of Sagrada Familia, perhaps the world’s most-famous modern cathedral, also designed by Antonin Gaudí and still under construction today, nearly 100 years since his passing.  The stained-glass windows provide a technicolor illumination of the nave “forest,” whose pillars rise from the floor and spread out at the top like trees.  Nature is a key element of the basilica’s design, from the moment one enters through the doors decorated in green, giving the illusion of a wall of ivy.  Following the visit, enjoy some free time in the afternoon and have dinner on own, then present a concert in Barcelona.

Sunday, June 14, 2026

Return to Sagrada Familia this morning to sing as the guest choir at the weekly International Mass.  After the Mass, visit the third of the tour’s Gaudí masterpieces – the city is full of them – his apartment building Casa Batlló.  The façade of this building appears impossibly hand-sculpted, with curves where one expects straight lines, a colorful texture, and tiles that appear to change color like scales on a fish…or dragon.  The interior brings even more delightful adventures in architecture. This final afternoon is free for shopping or any other individual activities, then the group will gather for a one-hour evening cruise on the Mediterranean Sea.  A farewell dinner follows the cruise, then return to the hotel to pack for the journey home.
